The National Commission for IT and Liberties (CNIL – Commission Nationale de l’Informatique et des Libertés) is an independent public authority in France whose aim is to monitor IT activities to ensure that they do not infringe upon individual or collective liberties. It carries out its activities pursuant to the Law from 6th January 1978, as amended on 6th August 2004.
